Champ’s Guide to Keeping Your Pup Happy When the Kids Go Back to School

Hi friends, Champ here — your favorite four-legged food critic and backyard squirrel chaser.

I don’t know about you, but summer is my season. Long walks, road trips, backyard BBQs, and best of all, lots of kids from the neighborhood are home! There’s always someone to sneak me a treat, toss a tennis ball, or let me nap next to their feet while they binge-watch cartoons. It’s the good life.

But then... something changes.

Suddenly, the backpacks come out. The mornings get rushed. The house gets quiet. And just like that, my house playmates vanish into a mysterious place called “school.” I’m left with a silent living room, a half-eaten breakfast, and a whole lot of feelings.

If your pup is anything like me, the back-to-school season can feel like a big shift. We’re creatures of habit, and when our routine changes, it can throw us off — emotionally and physically. But don’t worry, I’ve got some tail-wagging tips to help your dog adjust and stay happy while the humans hit the books.

1. Stick to a routine

Even if the house feels emptier, keeping a consistent schedule helps us feel secure. Try to keep feeding times, walks, and play sessions around the same time each day. Predictability = peace of mind (and full bellies).

2. Enrichment is everything

When the kids are gone, we need something to do! Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing balls, and frozen peanut butter Kongs are great ways to keep our minds busy. Bonus points if they involve snacks from me and my humans at Champ’s Pet Kitchen.

3. Leave a little love behind

A shirt that smells like the kids, a cozy blanket, or even a voice recording can help us feel connected. Trust me, we know your scent, and it’s like a warm hug when you’re away.

4. Make goodbyes and hellos low-key

Big emotional exits can make us anxious. A calm “see you later” and a relaxed return help us stay chill. Save the excitement for weekend adventures!

5. Weekend reconnection

Speaking of weekends — make time for extra snuggles, park visits, or a special treat. It helps us reset and reminds us that we’re still part of the pack.

So while the back-to-school season might feel a little ruff (see what I did there?), with a few thoughtful tweaks, your pup can stay happy, healthy, and tail-waggingly content.

And hey,  if you ever need a midday snack to lift your spirits, I know a guy who knows a guy who makes the best treats in town.

Until next time,

🐾 C.
